APPLES NORTH GEORGIA
Although Georgia, the Peach State is known nationwide for its peaches, the North Georgia Mountains are known for their apples and apple orchards. The Georgia peach is still honored in the North Georgia Mountains. When in season, you can buy fresh Georgia grown peaches as well as a fresh array of Georgia grown fresh produce including fruit and vegetables at the local applestands. In addition to numerous varieties of apples, you can also buy ice cream, pies, turnovers, donuts, breads, muffins, cookies, caramel apples, cider, apple dumplings.
Take a ride through scenic Apple Orchard Alley on Highway 52 East in Ellijay to enjoy the expansive views of the valleys and mountains and buy freshly picked Ellijay apples or other favorite apple goodies.
Many of these Ellijay apple orchards offer a year round selection of baked goods including apple pies and breads, several different kinds of cider, apple juice, gifts, local crafts. In summer, be sure to try the Georgia peaches. Many of the Georgia Mountains Ellijay orchards feature pick-your-own apples in the fall. Most of the apple orchards are located on GA 52 west out of Ellijay on the road to Burt's Pumpkin Farm, Amicalola Falls and Dahlonega. In addition, visit the Georgia Apple Festival held in Elijay on the second and third weekends of October. The Georgia Apple festival with over 300 vendors highlights any craft, art,food, music,demonstation, interpretive program celebrating the Georgia apple. The kids will appreciate a visit to the petting zoo at Hillcrest Orchards in Apple Orchard alley on Highway 52. Hillcrest Orchards is more than a roadside apple stand or apple orchard. Hillcrest features entertainment for the whole family with a petting zoo and fun activities including a moonshine museum. During their Apple Pickin' Jubilee Days pick your own apples, wagon rides, playground, pig races, moonshine museum, entertainment, food, corn maze, petting farm and pony rides. They also have a fall festival on October weekends with the same activities as Apple Pickin' Jubilee with the exception of apple picking. Be sure to order the hot apple pie and ice cream or the apple cider donuts at the bakery and ice cream shop.
Heading north to Blue Ridge on Highway 515, be sure to visit the Blue Ridge Georgia Mountains for the numerous apple orchards and farmstands. Mercier Orchards in Blue Ridge is a special farmstand that is a year round favorite for locals and tourists. Mercier Orchards features homemade, cookies, jams, jellies, apple butter, pickles, salsas, fried pies, donuts, fritters, coffee, apple and other fruit pies, breads, muffins, apple cider and peach cider, apple butter.
Another favorite apple farmstand stop and an easy stop while in Ellijay is Panorama Orchards on Highway 515 for some of their famous fried apple pies topped with homemade ice cream.
In September, plan to spend a day drinking fresh cold apple cider or hot mulled cider, visiting the orchards and picking your own apples at one of the famous North Georgia orchards in Ellijay or Blue Ridge.
The North Georgia cabin, River Glorious, in Ellijay is located off Highway 52 East near Apple Alley heading to Dahlonega and Amicalola Falls and Burts Pumpkin Farm.

The Annual Georgia Apple Festival is always held on the second and third weekends in October at the Ellijay Lions Club Fairground South of Elijay off Highway 5. Hours: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day rain or shine!
The Georgia Apple Festival features music and entertainment with over 300 vendors with art, jewelry, handmade, hand-crafted items, baked items that feature the Georgia apples as well as many on-site interpretive demonstrations of how selected types of crafts in the North Georgia Mountains are made.

B.J. Reece Apple House has fresh apples, various fruits, vegetables, canned goods,jellies and jams, ciders, fresh apple pies, and numerous other gift items. B.J. Reece Orchards begin pick your own apples the second weekend in September. They have U-pick everyday (weather permitting) from 10:00 am till 5:30 pm every half hour. They allow people to go on guided tours for the U-pick until all apples in this field are harvested which is usually around the third weekend in October. Apples: Ozark Gold, Gala, Red Delicious, Empire, Jonathan, Jonagolds, Golden Delicious, Mutsu Golden, Red Rome Beauty, Rome Beauty, Stayman Winesap, Arkansas Black, Granny Smith, Yates, Fuji.
