NORTH GEORGIA STATE PARKS

State Parks, Mountains and National Forests

Features prehistoric rock formations. Fort Mountain State Park derives its name from an ancient 855 foot long rock wall which stands on the highest point of Fort Mountain. Many theories about the mysterious wall abound but it is believed to have been built by Indians as fortification against other more hostile Indians or for ancient ceremonies. Situated in the Chattahoochee National Forest close to the Cohutta Wilderness area, this North Georgia Mountains state park offers a variety of outdoor activities. Hiking trails pass through hardwood forests with  stream crossings and spectacular views. This is a great location for a picnic.

The Chattahoochee National Forest is full of hiking trails with scenic vistas, mountains to climb, whitewater rivers and countless waterfalls. The Chattahoochee National Forest also preserves the history where the Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto searched for gold, the Cherokee Indians' fought to keep their homes, and major battles of the Civil War were fought.
